Dry ice blasting/snow blasting with CO2 cleaning from Venjakob

Read post Presse-kit

You know the drill: Whether metal, plastic, glass, ceramics or building materials - surfaces need to be cleaned before coating. The best way to do this is with CO2 dry ice blasting systems from Venjakob. This dry ice cleaning is available as a stand-alone solution on request. Or - and this is the solution that we at Venjakob recommend to all our customers - you can integrate it into your existing processes. But whether upstream or as a stand-alone solution - dry ice blasting/snow blasting guarantees residue-free cleaning of your workpieces and thus creates an essential prerequisite for flawless coating. Find out exactly how it works here.

CO2 blasting- our solution for your cleaning problem

Industrial coatings almost always require surface pretreatment. This can be abrasive processes, activation processes or surface cleaning. Even CO2 blasting is just one cleaning method among others. Venjakob also offers dedusting processes with additional ionization or aqueous alkaline cleaning. Each of these processes has its own specific field of application. But sometimes nothing beats a targeted dry ice blast or snow blasting. Especially when it comes to cleaning three-dimensional small parts or workpieces in large batch sizes. Cleaning with dry ice proves to be a fast, thorough, extremely efficient and economical process. And it is also gentle. At Venjakob, we generally offer two methods depending on the degree of soiling:CO2 snow blasting for light to medium soiling and CO2 dry ice blasting for medium to heavy soiling.

Where is CO2 dry ice blasting/snow blasting used everywhere?

In general, cleaning with CO2 dry ice blasting/snow blasting has proven itself in many industries. In fact, the process is used in very different areas. Finally, this cleaning process is an integral part of complex coating processes that take a holistic approach to professional surface treatment. Venjakob is a leader in this field.

Customers often ask us: What can you blast with dry ice? In principle, our air blasting machines are suitable for every area of application. In particular, they are used for coating systems for:

The two variants of CO₂ cleaning - snow blasting and dry ice blasting - cover the entire spectrum from light to medium to heavy soiling.

During dry ice blasting, the pellets hit the layer to be removed under high pressure, freeze the dirt on the component surface and break it up. The crystals become gaseous through sublimation, which increases their volume and intensifies the effect of the compressed air: the dirt is literally blown away.

CO2 dry ice blasting process at a glance

Dry ice blasting uses solid carbon dioxide, so-called dry ice, as the blasting medium. The functional principle of dry ice blasting is comparable to abrasive blasting or high-pressure water blasting. Instead of water, sand or other abrasives, solid CO2 pellets- solid carbon dioxide, often called "dry ice pellets" - are used. The cleaning jet, consisting of a mixture of compressed air and dry ice particles, hits the surface to be cleaned at high speed. Specifically, liquid carbon dioxide is iced at a temperature of just under minus 80 degrees Celsius and shot at high pressure onto the surfaces to be coated in the form of pellets around three millimetres in size. The contaminants cool drastically, causing cracks to form in the dirt and the contaminants to become brittle, break open and detach from the surface to be coated. The cleaning method combines ice, cold and high-pressure air in a way that is gentle on the machines and surfaces.

CO2 snow blasting process

The snow blasting process is an alternative that can be used for less stubborn soiling or contamination. In terms of quality, snow blasting is somewhere between CO2 dry ice cleaning and high-performance dust removal. With noise protection measures and simple part fixation, this system variant is a very good pre-treatment. A cold burner produces its own dry ice from liquid CO2 . The cleaning jet consists of a mixture of

  • CO2 snow particles
  • CO2 gas that is not converted into particles
  • Compressed air

Advantages and features of Venjakob CO2 cleaning systems

CO2 dry ice blasting/snow blasting from Venjakob offers many advantages. You can find the most important ones here.

  • The cleaning intensity can be adapted to the process. Snow blasting or dry ice blasting - you decide which process is right for you.
  • Possible applications range from manual to fully automatic. The decisive factor is which is better suited to your production line.
  • Suitable for cleaning large areas before industrial finishing or gluing processes. From small parts to large workpieces in large batch sizes.
  • Can be installed on surfaces or robot systems. Available as a stand-alone solution and can be integrated into your line. If you need a dry ice blasting system, we can bring it in.
  • Can be flexibly integrated into existing system technologies. See above. Because this is precisely one of our core competencies.
  • Reliable continuous operation. Of course, if you need it and as long as you need it, it will run. This is exactly what the system is designed for.
  • DefinedCO2 consumption thanks to permanently installed CO2 volume regulation. We always keep an eye on your entire process. When it comes to cleaning with CO2, volume regulation is naturally part of the process. At least for us.
  • Wear-free and ice-proof. It runs and runs and runs. And cleans gently, quickly and efficiently.
  • No condensation. Nothing condenses. No moisture or water residue remains. For you, this means less cleaning work and more safety.
  • Cycle operation possible thanks to short switch-on and switch-off times. For optimum productivity.
  • Low space requirement. We are sure to find a solution. Even in the smallest of spaces.

Before every application comes the test: in our technical center

Every requirement profile is different. That's why we develop individual solutions. Above all, this means one thing: cooperation based on trust. Important for you to know: We understand our business. And yours. We know all the ins and outs of optimum coating. Just as we do with the entire upstream process, from feeding and pre-treatment to pre-heating. This also applies to the subsequent drying process. In short: we keep an eye on the entire process. Finally - before these individual solutions are implemented - we test the process under practical conditions in our in-house technical centre in Rheda-Wiedenbrück. Yours too. You can find out more about this by contacting us.

Conclusion: Dry ice blasting is very effective

If you are still wondering how good dry ice blasting really is, rest assured: it is a very good process. Very effective.CO2-neutral and environmentally friendly to boot. The cleaning method combines ice, cold and CO2 in a form that pays off in every respect for industrial customers and the end users of their products. Thanks to dry ice cleaning, dirt can be removed perfectly from almost all surfaces. A positive side effect when the pellets hit the surface: the dry ice returns directly to a gaseous state, expanding many times over and amplifying the effect of the compressed air through the expansion of its volume. The dirt and impurities are swept off the surface. And when the abrasive evaporates, you do not have to dispose of it. You only have to dispose of the contaminants and the dirt loosened from the surface.
